Sound
In September 2012, a number of Swan Hill and district artists were invited to place their works in various locations in the business centre of the town. The occasion was the Go North Arts Festival.
My contribution was to tie up a bag o' sound in the main street butcher's shop. The concept, such as it was, included generating wonder from the shoppers as they waited patiently for their turn to buy their chops and sausages-- and that a white sack, tied by twine at its neck and hanging from a hook at the back of the room, could rise above its own limitations and offer up odd but soothing sounds. The sound files came out of hidden battery-powered speakers in a repeating loop of 128 one-minute tracks. They were all drones. The samples here, combining synthesised and instrumental sounds and recordings from nature, are taken directly from the project. The track I AM ONLY AN EGG DRONE 4 Angel Azreel has been my ringtone ever since. It always gets attention. Local ABC radio took an interest and tried to get to the bottom of it all in an interview. |
