SOUND and event
It's said that the "twig", or "twiggy" was once a way of delaying the trip home, especially after a great night out. You might have been at the community hall for a dance, or with friends and family at the neighbour's woolshed. The night draws on, and it's clearly time to be home, but a few people pull off the road and build a small fire, perhaps swinging the billy. Conversation occurs. A guitar might be produced or a poem recited.
Twig events were developed in 2012-2014 by ACRE and the genius Ian Tully, Director of the Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery, printmaker and polymath, and they resonate with many artists and participants still. I was in on Twigs 1 and 4. The chance to gather sounds from the Twig sites a day or a few days ahead, bring them into cohesive form, and have these works emerge from the bush as the events of the night unfold was a beautiful opportunity. Contributing to the work of Trevor Flinn was an experience that I can only hope will not be once in a lifetime. Naturally, ABC radio's Creative Instinct became aware and produced the 25 minute program linked here. |
